Meet Layna
Layna Mee is a RISE AmeriCorps Member serving with EMBARC in Waterloo.
Layna and her family resettled in the United States in 2010 after living in a refugee camp in Thailand. Now in Waterloo, Layna recently graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a dual bachelor’s degree in pre-professional nursing and public health with an emphasis on global health and humanitarian assistance. Layna previously worked as a nursing assistant and was involved in the TRIO Program throughout college. In the future, she would like to become a registered nurse in obstetrics and gynecology. “I am interested in serving with RISE AmeriCorps to build up professional experiences working with refugee families and to create networks within non-profit organizations. This will allow me to work in the healthcare field with a community aspect in the future. Also, as a refugee myself, I see this opportunity to pay it forward and help those who are in need.” In her free time, Layna enjoys playing volleyball with friends and cooking. |
