Erika Macias is a RISE AmeriCorps member with the Iowa Latino Affairs Commission.
Erika migrated to the United States alone looking for a new start. She is currently working with her husband on their bilingual multimedia business, Hola America News and HolaIowa.com. While living in the US for over 20 years, Erika has noticed the lack of resources for the Latinx community and knew that due to the pandemic the struggles for the people of color would only increase.
Before moving to West Des Moines, she lived in the Quad Cities area where she was a board member of the Latino Community Outreach group for the Red Cross and Ambassador for the QC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Moline. Erika also belonged to the United Methodist Women Group as Language Coordinator, and she has been the host of the Mexican Consulate of Chicago visit to Moline for the last 10 years.
This experience has led Erika to join the Línea de Ayuda through EMBARC in order to assist her community with any information they may need. And by doing so, this opportunity gives her a chance to learn more about her community in many ways.
