Elena Burke is a RefugeeRISE AmeriCorps member from Cedar Rapids, serving with the Latino Affairs Commission of Iowa. Elena received her Bachelor's degree in Public Health with a minor in Spanish from Saint Louis University in 2018.
For the past two years, Elena lived and served at a children’s home for at-risk and vulnerable children in Honduras while working at the onsite surgical center serving the surrounding communities. During this time, her conversations regarding the journey of the migratory caravans through Central America to the United States inspired her to get more involved in the LatinX communities back home.
Working with the Línea de Ayuda is an opportunity that will expand her knowledge of services available throughout the state while connecting with Spanish-speaking clients and empowering them to seek the help and resources they need during the COVID-19 pandemic.
