Cassie Van Es is a recent graduate from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. She is from a small town in Northwest Iowa and came to the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area for college.
Before moving to Iowa, Cassie had no idea there was a refugee population in the state. Once she learned about the history of Iowan refugees in one of her classes, she wanted to get involved with EMBARC and had the opportunity to intern in the youth program.
Following her internship, Cassie wanted to continue to work with the organization. She joined RISE during the COVID-19 pandemic to help the refugee and immigrant communities through this challenging and uncertain time.
"I have enjoyed learning about the culture and interacting with people from the community", Cassie says of her RISE experience.
